One timeline does not fit every job: matching your stages to the work

A clear timeline is one of the simplest ways to keep a client calm and a job on track — everyone can see where things are and what comes next. But a timeline only helps if it fits the work. Put an eight-stage construction programme on a two-day decorating job and you have not added structure, you have added noise: seven stages that will never apply and a client wondering why their spare-room repaint has a "second fix" phase.

The stages should match the job

Different trades have genuinely different shapes. A full renovation runs through mobilisation, strip-out, structure, first fix, plastering, second fix, finishes and snagging. A bathroom is more like strip-out, first fix and tanking, tiling, second fix, snagging. A decorator is prep, paint, sign off. A driveway is excavation, sub-base, laying, pointing. Forcing all of those into one template does none of them justice.

The right approach is to start from the type of job and let the timeline follow — so the stages you see are the stages that actually apply, and nothing else.

Fewer, clearer stages beat more

It is tempting to think more stages looks more thorough. On the client's side, the opposite is true. Three well-named stages they understand are more reassuring than ten they have to decode. The point of the timeline is that a non-builder can glance at it and know where their job is. Every stage that does not apply to their job works against that.

Keep it editable

No template survives contact with a real job perfectly, so whatever you start from should be yours to change — rename a stage to your own words, drop one that does not apply, add one that does, adjust the dates. A good starting template saves you setting up from scratch every time; it should never lock you into stages that do not fit how you actually work.
