Give clients a window into the job — and stop answering “any update?”

The single biggest drain on a builder’s week is keeping clients informed by text and call. A client portal flips it: they look instead of asking, on their phone or their laptop, under your brand.

Ask any builder what eats their evenings and the answer is rarely the building. It is the keeping-everyone-informed: the "any update?" texts, the client's partner ringing for a progress photo, the drip of small questions that each take two minutes and collectively take your week. The instinct is to answer faster. The fix is the opposite — give the client somewhere to look, so they stop needing to ask.

A portal is just "their job, in one place"

A client portal is not a complicated thing. It is a single page — on the web and in the app — that shows the client exactly their job and nothing else: where it is on the timeline, the latest update with photos, any decision you need from them, and what they owe. Because everything they might text you about is already on that page, the texts stop. You post one update from the van and everyone who needs to know, knows.

Money they can see is money they do not query

The part clients worry about most is the money, so it is the part worth showing most clearly. A simple summary — the project value, what they have paid so far, and what is still to come — answers the anxious question before it is asked. When the numbers are visible and move in real time as stages are invoiced and paid, the completion bill is never a shock, and you spend no time reconstructing "what have I actually paid you so far?" from memory.

Under your brand, not the tool's

A portal that carries someone else's logo quietly undersells you. The client should open their project and see your business — your name, your logo — not the software you happen to run it on. Done right, the portal makes a sole trader look as organised as a firm with an office, which is exactly the impression that wins the next job.

Same picture on the phone and the laptop

Clients are not consistent about devices — one checks on their phone at lunch, their partner opens a laptop in the evening. If the two show different things, you are back to fielding "but it said…" messages. The portal and the app should show the same live picture, so it genuinely does not matter which one they open.
